Join MUSE as we welcome Rivers Qinnan Zhu for an artist talk, and Bookmark Workshop in the MUSE2320 brick & mortar! This event is a FREE outreach workshop with Rivers as an artist in residence at the Anderson Center in Red Wing, MN.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the intersection of textile heritage and contemporary craft by creating a personalized bookmark using archival remnants. Using traditional Japanese Kasuri fabric scraps collected during my textile research in Fukuoka, structural bases (such as fusible interfacing or cardstock), natural threads, and simple hand-stitching techniques, participants will compose miniature textile collages and small-scale patchwork arrangements.
The session focuses on material tactility, color composition (incorporating natural neutral and indigo tones), and the expressive quality of looping stitching. By assembling these fragments, participants will experience how small pieces of textile history can be bound together across time. Everyone will leave with a unique, handmade bookmark carrying its own tactile narrative.
Rivers Qinnan Zhu (She/They) is a visual artist, educator, and cultural lace maker living and working between Xiaoshan, Tokyo and Chicago. Her practice draws from textile histories, ecological entanglements, and familial memory. She holds an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently a doctoral researcher in fine arts and crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts. Her recent residencies and research have taken her to craft laboratories and artist communities across East Asia, North America, and Europe.
